What is "dryland"? ~ Dryland is a term used to describe a workout for a swimmer that is performed on dry land. It usually consists of bodyweight exercises and its main focus is to increase strength since water can only provide so much resistance. Strength is most often what is lacking in swimmers that only swim. Using exercise bands and weight lifting are acceptable forms of dryland and increase strength even better. We have a great page set up to link you with practical exercise plans to get you going today. It is linked here and in the title of this section.

What is a "feed"? ~ This is a term you may hear in swimming circles. A "swim feed" or "team feed" is an excuse to get the team together and eat before a meet. It builds team comradery. Usually the foods eaten at these gatherings have a lot of carbohydrates. It is proven that carbohydrates consumed 24 hours before expending large amounts of energy can be beneficial for performance. These complex sugars have time to break down into simple sugars for the body to use when they are needed most.

~ What is "Taconite"? This is a weekend in February where the boy's team gets a coach bus and drives to Northern Minnesota on a Friday night for a dual meet with Chisholm. The next morning we go to Masabi East High School for the Taconite Invitational. Click HERE for all the details.

~ What is "Taper"? ~ Essentially your swimmer will decrease yardage in the weeks prior to their most important races at the end of the season. They also become intentional about all aspects of their specific races. This creates focus and a boost during the Section and State meet. There is a science behind it and it really works! Oh...and did we mention no sugar intake during this time?

What is a "Section Cut"? ~ Throughout a swim season, swimmers need to try to swim under a certain time. Each event has a threshold that lets you into the Section Meet on March 23th & 25th in Willmar 2022. If you aren't quite there yet, coaches will guide your swimmer though a taper for two weeks or so prior to that last regular season meet to get you to your time. If you don't make section cut by the last regular season meet (March 11th), no big deal. We will have you clean things up at the pool during the next practice and say goodbye. This is part of the sport and we will see you at the Banquet!

The same rules apply for the State Cut. There is a TIME cutoff for making it into this meet also. However, the top 3 places in a race at Sections go on to swim at the State Meet (March 2 & 3). Work hard in the off season and you WILL make it! A listing of the Section Cut Times can be found in our handbook (sections 6 & 7).
